The Certina brand's direct predecessor, a watch movement workshop, was founded by brothers Adolf and Alfred Kurth in the Swiss town of Grenchen in 1888. The company chose the name Certina on the occasion of the 50^th anniversary of its founding in 1938. It was DS - Double Security technology, which increased the watch's durability by using a combination of sapphire crystal and additional seals on the crown and reinforced lid. The DS system has contributed to the brand's popularity among famous athletes, which has helped make Certina the leader in the middle class of watches. A few years later in 1938, however, a new watch brand was born, namely Certina. The name comes from the Latin word "certus", which translates as "reliable and accurate". However, 1959 was a breakthrough year, when the DS - Double Security concept for Certina watches was launched. It was a dual security concept that is still used in watches today.
